People in India generally relate the term “scholarship” with college or university studies.  But the term is as much applicable for students studying in school. Participating in scholarship programmes from school-level acts as a major boost in a child’s confidence. Not only this, these go on to enhance the child’s CV when he or she applies for college or even for the first job.

Although parents these days are more aware, there are still some school-level private and government scholarships that they miss out on. Here’s a list of some well-known scholarships that would help your child have a better future: -

Scheme for Early Attraction of Talent (SEATS)

Under the Scheme for Early Attraction of Talent, the Ministry of Science and Development identifies students from class 6th to class 10th for the INSPIRE Award. With over 2 lakhs scholarships, the programme welcomes original and creative technological ideas/innovations from these students and rewards the best ones out of those.  The scheme is applicable for both private and government schools of India.

The aim of this initiative is to motivate students to pursue Science and Research as a career. Each selected candidate receives ₹ 5,000 to 10,000 to convert the idea into a project and later showcase it.

Velammal Science Talent Search (VSTS) Exam

Velammal Educational Trust of Tamil Nadu conducts this exam. With this, a student’s aptitude and problem-solving skills are checked and rewarded.  The 6-level examination offers an overall cash reward of ₹ 4 lakhs across all levels.  Students from Class 1st to 12th in Tamil Nadu or Pondicherry can apply for it from early September to early October every year and stand a chance to win the cash prize.

The medium of examination is English with an entry fee of ₹ 50/-

CSIR Innovative Award for School Children - CIASC

The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), Government of India welcomes students below 18 years of age to participate in the ‘CIASC-2018’ competition.  Students can also take part in groups and present their unique technical ideas in the form of a proposal.  Each candidate/group is allowed to send only one entry in English or Hindi, in not more than 5,000 words.

A total of 15 prizes are given under this award and the winner receives a cash reward of ₹1 lakh.

National Talent Search Exam (NTSE)

NTSE scholarship is a well-known scholarship exam for students studying in class 10th.   The National Council of Education Research and Training conducts this exam to help students pursue higher studies. There are two levels of this exam, one is the State Level and the other is the National Level.  Any student below the age of 18 can apply for this and win financial help for future studies.

A total of 1,000 students take part in this programme every year and can even prepare for it via different coaching centres. The exam follows the NCERT syllabus and conducted in written format.

Jio Scholarship

Jio Scholarship funded by Reliance focuses on providing financial support to students of class 10th, 11th and 12th. About 2,800 students will be rewarded in the year 2018 to pursue higher studies. The programme comes under the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) of Reliance JIO Infocomm Limited.

The aim of the initiative is to help candidates belonging from financially weak backgrounds, to complete their studies in the areas of their interest and not compromise with their dreams.

Tata Building India School English Essay Competition

The Tata Building India School English Essay Competition is for students from class 6th to class 12th. The topics for the essay relate to “nation building” and students can take part in both online and offline modes. This initiative by Tata Group of Companies encourages the new generation to present their ideas and showcase their extraordinary writing talent.

The word limit is 1,000 words and the essays are screened at 3 levels:

  • School Level
  • State Level
  • National Level

Winners are declared at each level with a range of prizes that goes from Cameras / MP3 players, certificates to grand prizes like laptops and trophies.

Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana (KVPY)

KVPY scholarship is a programme conducted by the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India. Students with an inclination and aptitude towards basic science can apply for this.  It is known as one of the best scholarships for school students of class 11th and 12th. Candidates get selected by their performance in the aptitude test and later called in for an interview round.

Once selected, the applicants receive a generous fellowship to complete education up to the Ph.D. level (3 years for basic science course and 5 years for the integrated course). Getting a scholarship like this really adds weight to the student’s CV and provides him/her with many opportunities in the future.

Pre-Matric and Post-Matric Scholarship

The Pre-Matric scholarship scheme is for students from class 1st to class 10th.  It is for students from minority communities such as; Muslim, Christian, Sikh, Buddhist and Parsi.  This fully-funded scholarship initiated by the Government of India is for students with an annual family income of ₹ 1 lakh or below.
The Post-Matric scholarship is for students of class 11th and 12th. This government initiated scheme covers the admission, tuition and maintenance fee of the selected students.

Even though both of these scholarships are for minority students, there is a reserved share of 30% for minority girl students.

Saraswati Academy Scholarship Test (SAST)

Students who do well in the Saraswati Academy Test receive the scholarship amount. The programme is for students of class 10th (appearing / passed). Saraswati Online.Com Academy conducts an exam with a motive of helping deserving students meet their educational goals.  It is held in various centres across the country in West Bengal, Tamil-Nadu and Karnataka.

This scholarship holds a huge weightage in the student’s CV and offers an amount of ₹ 15,000/-. SAST is MCQ based and requires an application fee.

Vidyadhan Scholarship

Vidyadhan Scholarship offers a yearly financial help of up to ₹ 6,000 to students of class 10th. Students from Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Telangana, Tamil Nadu and Kerala can apply for this scholarship programme.

This initiative by Sarojini Damodaran Foundation is only for those applicants who belong from families which an annual income of ₹ 2 lakhs or less.

Indian Oil (IOCL) Academic Scholarship

The Indian Oil Academic Scholarship is for students of class 11th and higher. Students receive a reward based on their performance in class 10th examinations. The scholarship amount is of ₹ 1,000 per month for a period of 2 years.

A total of 2,000 scholarships for school students are available under this programme. Students from recognized institutes such as ICSE, CBSE, ISC, Central Govt. and State Govt. can easily apply.

SHDF Scholarship

NIKSHAM and a Relief Committee of Greater New York offer the Sikh Human Development Foundation scholarship. Students with a minimum score of 50% are eligible to apply for this programme.

Intelligent but economically weak students from Class 7th to class 11th students can apply and receive an amount of ₹ 12,000 to ₹ 24,000/-. Moreover, it covers over 400 students from Govt. and aided schools of Delhi and Shahabad (Haryana) every year.
