CSAB Counselling 2020 - Seat Allotment for SFTIs, NEUT, and UT

Last Modified: 06 Oct 2024

The Central Seat Allocation Board conducts the CSAB counselling process for admission into the Engineering/ Technology and Architecture/ Planning courses in the participating IIITs, NITs, and GFTIs. The admission is offered on the basis of JEE Main scores. The CSAB counselling process is done only for the B.E., B.Tech., B.Arch., and B.Planning courses. Here we are providing complete information about the registration process, important dates, seat allocation and more.

What is CSAB?

CSAB is the Central Seat Allocation Board. In 2002, the Ministry of Human Resource Development, GoI, took a policy decision of conducting an All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE) every year. The exam replaced various institute level engineering entrance exams conducted until then. The government also constituted a Central Counselling Board (CCB) for coordinating the admission process. In the year 2013, CCB was renamed as the Central Seat Allocation Board. AIEEE was also renamed as JEE (Main). Thus, CSAB is the board which carries out the counselling procedure for engineering admissions on the supernumerary seats based on JEE Main scores. Admission to all other seats is done through JoSSA centralised seat allocation process.

What is CSAB Counselling?

CSAB counselling is conducted by the Central Seat Allocation Board for admission to NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs on the basis of JEE Main score. The CSAB counselling process starts after the JoSSA counselling process ends. The admission is done for the supernumerary seats for engineering, technology, architecture, and planning. The CSAB counselling process is conducted through three separate channels as:

  • CSAB NEUT (for North-Eastern States and Union Territories)
  • CSAB SFTI (Self-Financed Technical Institutes)
  • CSAB UT (Supernumerary Seats for Union Territory)

The registration process for all three channels will be separate and online. The registration process is necessary for seat allotment. Seat allotment will also be done separately.

What are Supernumerary Seats?

Supernumerary seats are the seats created for accommodating the more students in a course if the number of seats in the course is less than the candidates with the same rank. These seats are created in addition to the existing seats.

For example:

If two students score the same marks (even after applying the tie-breaking criteria), they will be awarded the same rank and both will be equally eligible for admission to any particular course. Thus, an extra seat is required to accommodate the additional student. This seat is called a supernumerary seat.

Also, from the year 2018 onwards, MHRD has introduced supernumerary seats for female candidates to increase the percentage of female admissions.
