Swami Vivekananda Merit-cum-Means Scholarship (SVMCM) is offered by the Government of West Bengal to meritorious students from economically backward sections of the state. The scholarship is also known by the name Bikash Bhavan Scholarship. The scholarship is applicable for students studying at the higher secondary, undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral levels. The scholarship was revamped in 2016 when the number of seats and rewards was increased. The sanctioned amount under the scheme was increased from ₹ 45 crore to ₹ 2,000 crore. Swami Vivekananda Scholarship Eligibility Criteria

Eligibility criteria for the scholarship scheme are as under:

  • Applicants must have a domicile of West Bengal.
  • Must be pursuing studies at the post-madhyamik level and above at recognised institutes in the state.
  • Candidates must have passed the pre-madhyamik level education from a state board/ council of secondary/ higher secondary, or Madrasah education, or a state university.
  • Annual family income (from all sources) must be less than or equal to ₹ 2.5 lakh.
  • Only for Minority Communities - Applicants must belong to Minority Community (Muslim/ Sikh/ Christian/ Buddhist/ Parsee/ Jain)

Class 11th or equivalent (higher secondary level)

  • Must have passed Madhyamik Pariksha or equivalent examination with 75% aggregate marks

Diploma (Polytechnic level)

  • Must have passed Madhyamik Pariksha or equivalent exam with 75% marks for one-year diploma course
  • Must have passed the higher secondary exam or equivalent with 75% marks for a two-year diploma course in Pharmacy, 3-D animation & Graphics, Modern Office Practice and Management

Undergraduate courses

  • Must have qualified higher secondary exam or equivalent with 75% aggregate marks in the best five subjects

Postgraduate courses

  • Passed honours subjects at graduation level with 53% marks (general education)
  • Passed honours in engineering at graduation level with 55% marks (engineering courses)

Kanyashree applicants

  • Must be in receipt of a valid sanctioned K-2 ID
  • Must be pursuing PG course in Science, Commerce, or Arts
  • Must have passed graduation with 45% marks in aggregate

M.Phil./ Non-NET/ NET-LS Research Fellow

  • Must have enrolled for a PhD or M.Phi. programme at a state-aided institution

Swami Vivekananda Scholarship 2021 Application Process

Applications for the Swami Vivekananda Scholarship will be accepted online only through the official website. Candidates are advised to submit only one application form. In case multiple applications are submitted, all applications will be considered duplicate and will be rejected. Here is the application process.

  • Visit the official website at https://svmcm.wbhed.gov.in/ and click the ‘Registration’ button.
  • Read the instructions, tick the declaration, and click the ‘Proceed for Registration' button.
  • Provide the details asked for and submit the form. On successful submission of the registration form, an applicant ID will be generated.
  • After generation of application ID, log in using the applicant ID, password, and Captcha.
  • Fill in the required details, upload the scanned images of the applicant's photograph, and signature. The image and signature must be in JPG/ JPEG format and size 20KB-50KB and 10KB-20KB, respectively.
  • Upload the scanned images of supporting documents in PDF format not exceeding 400KB.
  • Check the entire application carefully and submit the application form to complete the process.

SVMCM Scholarship Selection Process

For selecting the candidates, both academic merit and financial need will be taken into consideration. The selection process comprises:

  • Sorting of applications in descending order based on the marks obtained in the qualifying exam and income criteria.
  • After the merit list is prepared, the scholarship amount will be disbursed into candidates’ bank accounts.
