UPPCS Exam

As the name suggests, PCS, expanded as Provincial Civil Services, is the ultimate pathway to build a career in the administration of Uttar Pradesh Government. Every year, hundreds and thousands of candidates take UP PSC PCS examination, which is conducted by Uttar Pradesh Public Service Commission. Those who emerge successful in the exam are placed at district, divisional, sub-divisional and state level posts.

The PCS exam 2018 will be held in three phases – the prelims, the mains and viva-voce (personality test). The tentative dates for the exam (both preliminary and the main) have been announced. The preliminary exam has been scheduled to be held in June 2018, while the main is likely to be taken place in November 2018. Interested candidates are advised to keep a watch on the release of official notification by UPPSC (Uttar Pradesh Public Service Commission).

UP PCS 2018 Exam Pattern:

This space sheds light on the old exam pattern. Though the new exam pattern of UP PCS 2018 has been changed, it has not been updated on the official portal.

UP PCS 2018 Preliminary Exam Pattern: 

There will be two question papers objective in nature. Candidates must remember that the preliminary exam will have negative marking scheme. 0.25 marks will be deducted for every incorrect answer.

UP PCS 2018 Main Exam Pattern – The main examination will be descriptive in nature. The exam-takers will have 8 question papers. The General Studies subject will constitute the first and the second question papers. Among the remaining question papers, candidates will find 4 question papers comprising two optional subjects (which they have already selected from the list provided in the official notification). 1 question paper will be in the Hindi language. 1 question paper will be in the English language.

Viva-voce (Interview) – This will basically be a personal interview where candidates will get asked a wide range of questions from current affairs. Being well-acquainted with the syllabus and subjects will put you on the verge of clearing the round. Be confident with whatever you speak and keep your views openly. Make sure that your communication part should be clear and elaborative.

UP PCS 2018 Exam Syllabus:

Uttar Pradesh Public Service Commission conducts the UP PCS exam in three phases. Here’s the syllabus for each phase.

Preliminary Examination (Objective Type & Multiple choices) -

PAPER I – General Studies-I

  • Current events of national and international importance.     
  • History of India and Indian National Movement.
  • Indian and World geography - Physical, Social, Economic geography of India and the World.
  • Indian Polity and Governance - Constitution, Political System. Panchayati Raj, Public Policy, Rights issues etc.
  • Economic and Social Development - Sustainable Development Poverty Inclusion, Demographics, Social Sector Initiatives, etc.
  • General Issues on Environmental ecology, Bio-diversity and Climate Change- that do not require subject specialization.
  • General Science

Paper-II General Studies-II

  • Comprehension
  • Elementary Mathematics up to Class X level- Arithmetic, Algebra, Geometry and Statistics
  • Interpersonal skills including communication skills
  • Decision making and problem-solving
  • Logical reasoning and analytical ability
  • General mental ability
  • General Hindi up to Class Xth level
  • General English up to class Xth level

Main Examination (Compulsory & Optional Subjects) -

Compulsory Subjects

  • Essay 150 marks

  • General Studies (I-Paper) 200 marks

Optional Subjects

Candidates need to select any two subjects from the below list: Chemistry, Physics, Geography, Agriculture, Zoology, Mathematics, Economics, Sociology, Philosophy, Geology, Psychology, Botany, Law, Statistics & Veterinary Science, Animal Husbandry, Management, History-Social Work, Electrical Engineering, Anthropology, Commerce, Agricultural Engineering, Accountancy, Defence Studies Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Public Administration, Political Science & International Relations, English Lit., Hindi Lit., Urdu Lit., Arabic Lit., Sanskrit Lit. And Persian Lit.

Viva- Voce (Personality Test) – There is no specific syllabus for the phase III test.


Eligibility for UPPCS Exam 2018

The Uttar Pradesh Public Service Commission has a set of rules for the interested candidates who want to be in the administration of the state government. The eligibility criteria comprises the following –

  • He must be an Indian national.
  • His age must be between 21-40 years.
  • Must have a Bachelor’s Degree from a recognised university.
  • Reserved candidates will enjoy the upper age relaxation facility.
  • He needs to produce the domicile of the Uttar Pradesh state.


UPPCS Exam 2018 Application Process

  • Visit the online portal of the UPPSC i.e. http://uppsc.up.nic.in/
  • Click on the “Apply” button on the homepage.
  • Fill up the application form by providing details like name, valid email ID, address and active phone number.
  • Upload the scanned copy of signature and passport size photograph with correct pixel and resolution
  • Pay the application fee using the credit card, debit card, net banking, challan, etc.
  • Save the registration number and password and take a printout of the same for future use.

Q: If a candidate holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Science, is he eligible for UP PCS exam?

A: Yes, he is absolutely eligible for the exam. Candidates with a Bachelor’s Degree in any stream can fill up the application form only if his institute or university is government approved.

Q: Can a foreign national residing in India apply the exam?

A: No.

Q: I was born in the state of Uttar Pradesh and later on moved to Maharashtra. Does that mean I’m not all good for the Uttar Pradesh Provincial Civil Services?

A: Well, you can sit for the exam if you can produce the domicile of the Uttar Pradesh state.

Q: Who is the conducting authority of UP PCS exam?

A: It’s Uttar Pradesh Public Service Commission.

Q: Is there any update on the commencement of the exam?

A: There is still no update from the board. Once the official notification is out, it will be notified immediately.

Q: Is there negative marking scheme?

A: Yes. Candidates have to take extra care while answering.

A: 100 marks.
