CAT 2018 Detailed Syllabus – First Step towards CAT Preparation Journey

IIM, the exam-regulating body, has earlier announced the exam date for Common Admission Test (CAT) 2018. It is going to conduct the national-level management entrance test on 25 November (Sunday). Are you up for the exam? But the question arises – ‘how well you are acquainted with the CAT syllabus.’

Certainly, possessing the complete CAT syllabi is the first step towards your Common Admission Test preparation journey. However, the real challenge is the lack of awareness of the syllabus. Since CAT 2018 syllabus is not prescribed by the IIMs (not based on a particular curriculum), understanding the previous years’ question patterns will surely prove fruitful. The syllabus is mainly divided into three distinct areas or sections. They are –

  • Verbal and Reading Comprehension (VARC)
  • Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning (DI & LR)
  • Quantitative Ability (QA)

Verbal and Reading Comprehension (VARC) –

The VARC section deals with applicants’ basic knowledge and understanding of English Language. When we say basic, it is all about the ‘ability to read, understand and comprehend long sentences or paragraphs from different genres, grammar and composition and to identify the right logic in sentence constructions.

Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning (DI & LR) –

Data Interpretation in CAT means the typical varieties of data put in the form of tables, graphs and charts in a structured way. The data is mentioned in a calculation-based, counting-based, logic-based and structure-based.

The Logical Reasoning section has been devised a way that would bring the best mathematical and logical skills in you. It involves a wide range of puzzles and the questions of LR can be clubbed into the following categories –

  • Mapping and best routes
  • Blood relations
  • Circular Arrangements
  • Seating Arrangement problems
  • Grouping and pattern
  • Selection and conditionals

Quantitative Ability (QA)–

This section asks 34 questions to assess your mathematical skills, speed and accuracy. CAT aspirants must be thorough with basic and elementary mathematics. The mathematics topics have been drawn up to the 10th Class.

CAT 2018 Registration Notification:

The Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) has released the CAT 2018 registration notification on 30th July 2018. The online registration process for the entrance test will begin from 8th August 2018. The last date to register for the same is 19th September 2018. Important Dates:

CAT 2018 will be commenced on 25 November 2018. To sit in the exam, candidates need to download the CAT 2018 admit card and get a printout of it. The hall ticket will be available on the official website from 24 October to 25 November 2018. The answer key will be announced in December 2018 and the result will be declared in January 2019.
