No JEE Main Exam, Yet IITs fail to Attract Foreign Students

Even with supernumerary seats and direct entrance for JEE advanced, yet IITs fail to attract foreign students to appear for IIT entrance test.

JEE Advanced 2019: Despite the fact that the IITs have facilitated 10% supernumerary seats and 1100 reserved seats for foreign students, this year only 807 foreign-based candidates have applied for JEE advanced, out of which 53 appeared for the exam and only 1 have qualified. As per the records, last year only 51 foreign students registered themselves for the exam and only 36 candidates appeared for it and only four qualified for taking admission in IITs.

In the past consecutive years, Indian Institute of Technology has adopted several measuring parameters to persuade students to enrol for IITs. These parameters include the direct entry of foreign students to IIT JEE Advanced. Yes, students from outside India doesn’t need to appear for JEE Main, as they are eligible for the JEE Advanced. More than this, they only need to score at least 75% in Class 12th or equivalent.

Additionally, IITs have also started to conduct exams in foreign countries as well. This year the list of IIT exam centres where the exam was Ethiopia, Sri Lanka, Dubai, Nepal, Singapore, and Bangladesh. The exam conducting body was decided these countries based on the availability of interested candidates.

Eligibility of JEE Advanced 2019 for Foreign Candidates

 In order to apply for IITs, foreign students need to qualify at least one of the following criteria, as under:

  • Must have secured at least aggregate marks of 75% in Class 12th Board or equivalent.
  • Candidates must be in the top 20 percentile in their respective Class 12th Board or equivalent.

JEE Advanced 2019: Latest Updates

As per the official data, not many foreign students want to get a seat in the IIT. The trends show, this year only 807 candidates were enrolled, out of which 53 appeared in the exam and only 1 have passed the exam. Same as 2019, last year too only 51 foreign students registered themselves for the exam, out of which only 36 were eligible to appear for JEE Advanced 2018. In all these years, IIT-Delhi and IIT-Madras have been the top choice of foreign students for taking admission in the JEE Advanced.
