The Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities, Government of India invites applications for NSP Pre-Matric Scholarship for Students with Disabilities 2020-21 and NSP Post-Matric Scholarship for Students with Disabilities 2020-21 from physically challenged students. Candidates who are currently enrolled for the Class 9 and 10 can submit their applications for the Pre-Matric scheme, while students of class 11 to postgraduate level can apply for the Post-Matric scheme. The key objective of the scholarship is to support the students with disabilities for their studies and prepare them to earn their livelihood and find a dignified place for themselves in society. As per the officials, the last date to apply for the scheme is 31st December 2020.

More About The Scheme

To cater to the academic needs of specially-abled candidates, the Government of India has started Pre and Post Matric Scholarship Schemes. The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment is the nodal agency to award this scholarship to the eligible Indians.

The aim of these scholarships is to provide financial support to disabled students to complete their Class 10th education and pursue professional/ technical education afterwards.

Pre-Matric Scholarship for Students with Disabilities 2020-21

Eligibility for the Scholarship

  • Only Indian nationals are eligible for this scholarship.
  • Students with a minimum 40% disability are eligible for the scholarship. Those students with less than 40% disability are not eligible for the scholarship.
  • He/ she should be studying in Class 9th or Class 10th in any government school or in a school that is approved by the government or by the Central/ State board.
  • The students should be a regular student studying on a full-time basis.

Other Conditions of Eligibility

  • Maximum two children of the same parents are eligible to avail benefits under this scholarship. However, in such cases where the second child is twin, the scholarship can be availed by both children.
  • A student should not be availing benefits under any other scholarship scheme. In such cases, the student will be asked to opt for any one of the scholarships. However, a student can get food and lodging assistance from the government. He/ she can also get financial assistance for purchasing books, equipment/tool, and other gadgets related to studies. 
  • This scholarship is given only for one year to study in any particular class. If a student fails and repeats the same class, scholarship to study in that class will not be given any further.
  • The annual family income of the parents from all sources should not exceed ₹ 2.0 lakhs.

Benefits of the Pre-Matric Scholarship Scheme

The students get a monthly stipend as well as maintenance allowances under this scholarship.

The rates of the monthly stipend under this scholarship are as follows –

For Hostellers – They get ₹ 800 on a monthly basis for 12 months. Students also receive an additional grant of ₹ 1000 to meet any additional study-related expenses.

For Day Scholars – They get ₹ 500 on a monthly basis for 12 months. An additional amount of ₹ 1000 is also given to meet any study-related expenses.

Post Matric Scholarship for Students with Disabilities 2020-21

Disabled students receive support to pursue Higher Secondary and Post Secondary education also.

Eligibility for the Scholarship

  • Those candidates who have passed the Matriculation, Higher Secondary exam or any other higher exams of a recognised university or board are eligible for this scholarship.
  • Students can also avail benefits under this scholarship for pursuing courses at the Post graduation level or for pursuing a Certificate or Diploma course.
  • Students enrolled for distant education are also eligible for this scholarship.

Other Conditions of Eligibility

  • If a student pursues two courses simultaneously, then the scholarship can be availed only for one of the courses.
  • If a student fails or passes the Higher Secondary examination in Science/ Arts/Commerce with a low percentage of marks but gets admission in any recognised college to pursue Technical/ Professional/ Diploma/ Certificate course are eligible for the scholarship.
  • Even employed disabled students are also eligible for this scholarship provided the combined annual income of the applicant and his/her family is not more than the prescribed limit of the income.
  • The annual family income of the applicant should not exceed the yearly limit of 2.50 lakhs from all sources.

Benefits of the NSP Scholarship Scheme (Post-Matric)

The students get scholarship benefits as follows –

  • Maintenance Allowance
  • Disability Allowance
  • Reimbursement of a non-refundable fee
  • Book Allowance

Maintenance Allowance

The rates of the maintenance allowances are as follows –

For Pursuing Courses on the Degree Level (Group I)

If a student is pursuing a degree course like B. Com, B. A or B. Sc, M.Sc., M.A. etc. then the rate of the maintenance allowance is as follows -

  • For Hostellers – ₹ 1600 per month
  • For Day Scholars - ₹ 750 per month

For Pursuing Professional Courses (Group II)

If the student is pursuing any one of the professional degree courses – Hotel Management, Tourism Management, Interior Designing Management, LLB, B. Pharmacy, BFS, Dietetics, Commercial Art, Mass Communication, Rehabilitation Diagnostics, Financial Services (Banking, Taxation, and Insurance), the allowance will be:

  • For Hostellers – ₹ 1100
  • For Day Scholars - ₹ 700

For other courses leading to a Graduate degree (Group III)

  • For Hostellers - ₹ 950
  • For Day Scholars - ₹ 650

For the Post Matric Non- Degree courses (Group IV)

  • For Hostellers – ₹ 900
  • For Day Scholars – ₹ 550

Additional Conditions to Continue to Avail the Scholarship Benefits

  • The students should show a satisfactory progression from lower to higher classes in the educational institution. In case, the student show poor performance continuously then the scholarships will be cancelled.
  • If the Head/ Principal of the institution/ college reports about the misconduct of the student, the scholarship grant might get cancelled.
  • If students have won the scholarships on the pretext of the false statements, then scholarships will be cancelled and students will be asked to refund the given scholarship amount. The student will be blacklisted for these scholarships in the future.
  • The student should not change his/ her course. In such cases, the scholarship is cancelled.

  1. Visit the NSP official website.
  2. On the home page, click on the Central schemes and select “Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities”.
  3. Now, click on the relevant scholarship link as per your eligibility criteria and read all the guidelines and important dates.
  4. After this, click on the “New Registration” window and complete your registration by entering the right details.
  5. Start filling the form and upload all the asked documents and submit your application.

Criteria of Selection

The selection of the candidates will be based on the following criteria:

  • Percentage of marks obtained in the last qualifying examination.
  • Fulfillment of eligibility conditions.
  • Number of scholarship slots available to the state.
  • Percentage of disability will be taken into consideration if there is a tie for the percentage of marks.
  • State education department recommendation.

Norms of the Scheme

  1. 50% of the total scholarships are reserved for the female candidates. However, in case of the adequate number of female students are not available, the unutilised slots can be utilised by the suitable male candidates.
  2. Not more than two children with disabilities of the same parents can avail benefits under this scheme.
  3. The final selection of the candidates will be done by the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities based on the recommendations of the concerned state government department.
  4. The amount of scholarship will be directly transferred into the bank account of the beneficiary through PFMS.
