TOEFL Exam Types

The TOEFL test is conducted in two formats:

  • iBT (Internet-Based Test) and
  • Paper-Delivered Test

Among both, iBT is a more popular format and PBT is available only at locations where the internet is not supported. In addition, there is no ‘Speaking’ section in the PBT format.

TOEFL 2022 Important Dates

The exam is conducted throughout the year, and candidates can choose multiple dates for the TOEFL exam. While registering for the exam, candidates can see the available dates and centers for the exam. TOEFL 2022 exam dates are as under:

As mentioned above, ETS has launched the iBT Home Edition due to the ongoing COVID-19 situation. With this, the exam will be offered more than 60 times a year, 4 days a week from almost anywhere except for Mainland China and Iran. In the Home Edition, candidates can take the test from their own house and will be monitored online by a human proctor.

Choosing an Exam Date - While choosing the exam date, candidates must keep in mind the application submission deadline at their preferred universities. Take the test at least two to three months before the application submission so that there is enough time for retesting (if required) and score reporting.

TOEFL Exam Pattern

In the year 2019, the duration of the exam was decreased by 30 minutes. The new exam duration came into effect from 1st August 2019. The number of questions is also released in the reading, listening, and speaking sections. The new exam duration is now 3 hours. The exam tests the candidates for their Reading, Writing, Listening, and Speaking skills for the English language.

Score Range - 0 to 30 for each section. Thus, the total score is calculated in a range of 0 to 120.

Syllabus for TOEFL Exam

There is no specific syllabus for the exam. However, the pattern will help you in understanding the content of the exam.

Reading - 3 to 4 reading passages where 12 to 14 questions will be asked from each passage.

Listening - Short and long conversations. Questions will be asked based on these conversations.

Speaking - The responses must fulfil the tasks. The conversation must be sustained.

Writing - Well-organised essay with detailed explanation giving reasons.

TOEFL 2022 Eligibility

There are no specific eligibility conditions set by the exam conducting authority. However, some of the obvious conditions are as under:

  • As the exam is conducted for higher studies, candidates must have passed class 12th or equivalent education.
  • Having a valid passport at the time of the exam is also one of the criteria.
  • There is no age limit for the exam.

Note: Candidates are advised to check the eligibility conditions of their preferred university.

TOEFL 2022 Application Process

The TOEFL registration link remains active throughout the year, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Apart from online mode, the registration can also be done via phone, mail, or in person. The registration process closes seven days before the exam. So, candidates are advised to complete the process in time. The process for registration is mentioned under:

  • Visit the official TOEFL website at https://www.ets.org/toefl.
  • Click on the ‘Sign In/ Register’ button.
  • Under the ‘ New Users’ section, click on the ‘Create an Account’ button.
  • Provide your personal information, address, phone number, communication preference and move to the next page.
  • Provide additional information to complete the profile.
  • Search for exam dates and centers.
  • Generate username and password.
  • Pay the registration fee.
  • Review your information and submit the completed form.

Application Fee

For those appearing from India, the application fee is US$185 (for iBT) and US$180 (for Paper-Based Tests).

Registration by Mail

  • Download the application form and take a print.
  • Fill in the application form carefully.
  • Send the filled-in application form along with the fee to the address mentioned on the form or to the Gurgaon Resource Center.

The form must reach the concerned authority at least four weeks before the exam.

TOEFL Result and Scores

TOEFL scores will be declared six days after the test date. The scores will be available online at the students’ profiles. An email intimation is also sent when the score is available. The total score is the sum of scores obtained in all four areas. The TOEFL score is accepted in more than 130 countries. Printed score reports are mailed to candidates 11 days after the test which will further take 7 to 10 days to reach you. TOEFL scores remain valid for two years.
