23rd July 2020: As per the latest announcement made by HRD Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank, that CSAB has decided to revise and relax the eligibility and qualifying criteria for admission to NITs, IIITs & CFTIs. The officials took this decision to relax the eligibility criteria for admission to the National Institute of Technology (NIT) and Centrally Funded Technical Institute (CFTI) 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic in India.

Finally the official announcement has been confirmed by the HRD Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank in his tweet. He wrote, “JEE Main qualifiers for 2020 session will now only need to obtain a 12th class passing certificate to get admission into several leading institutes.”

Earlier students need to get the qualifying criteria of scoring a minimum of 75% marks in the Class 12 examination, which has been dropped by CSAB and will not be considered for offering admissions to NITs, IIITs & CFTIs institutes across the country.

Any student, who has a valid passing certificate of Class 12 examination and a valid JEE Main 2020 score, will be eligible to get admission to these institutions for academic year 2020-21.

Special Measure amid COVID-19 Pandemic

The decision to relax the eligibility criteria for admission to NITs, IIITs & CFTIs is a special measure by the Central Seat Allocation Board, considering the prevailing circumstances due to COVID-19 pandemic. The foundation behind the decision is that numerous students from various state boards couldn’t appear for some of the papers for Class 12 Board Exams due to the outbreak of Coronavirus pandemic in the country. For such students, the criteria for 75% marks in class 12 board exams seemed to be an unfair requirement. Addressing their concerns, the CSAB has decided to drop this as qualifying criteria for admissions as a onetime measure.

Now, any student with a valid Class 12 Passing certificate and a JEE Main 2020 qualifying rank or score, will be eligible to seek admission to these institutions without any hassle.

What was the Admission Criterion Before?

Talking about the admission criteria, before a student’s needs to have at least 75 per cent or figure in the top 20 percentile of her class 12 board results along with clearing the JEE Main to be selected for admission to NITs and CFTIs. While, on the other hand, SC/ST candidates should have either scored at least 65 per cent or fulfill the top 20 percentile requirement.
