Last Modified: 25 Apr 2024

Aadhaar number/enrollment number is no more mandatory for NEET application process. Supreme Court has directed CBSE to follow the orders.

07 March 2018: In a recent update, the Supreme Court has directed the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) not to make Aadhaar number mandatory for the aspirants of the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) 2018 and all other Indian exams.

A bench of five judges headed by the Chief Justice Dipak Misra directed the CBSE to upload the related information on its official website for NEET examination with immediate effect as the last date for form submission is 09 March 2018.

Earlier today (Wednesday), the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) told the SC that it has not authorised CBSE to make Aadhaar number mandatory for students appearing in the NEET 2018 examination.

The UIDAI said this on a plea challenging CBSE’s decision of making Aadhaar number/enrollment number mandatory for those aspiring for NEET 2018. The plea was dismissed by the Gujarat High Court on 27 February and an appeal was made in the Supreme Court against Gujarat High Court’s order.

In this regard, the Attorney General K K Venugopal had said that he has instructions from the UIDAI that for students from Jammu and Kashmir, Assam and Meghalaya, other ID proofs such as voter card, passport number and ration card can be accepted by the CBSE for the medical entrance exam.

As per the public notice issued by CBSE regarding Aadhaar Card on its official website;

Applicants who are in possession of Aadhaar, shall enter Aadhaar number, name, date of birth & gender in online application for NEET (UG), 2018 for the purpose of his/her identity and authentication thereof.

Applicants not yet enrolled for Aadhaar, are hereby required to make application for Aadhaar enrolment in case he/she is entitled to obtain Aadhaar as per section 3 of Aadhaar Act. Such applicant may visit any Aadhaar enrolment center (list available at www.uidai.gov.in) to get enrolled for Aadhaar.”

“The above provisions shall be applicable in all States except J&K, Assam & Meghalaya.”

The NEET 2018 exam is scheduled to be conducted on 06 May 2018 (Sunday).
